When Your AC Isn't Cooling the Way It Should
Select the symptom that sounds familiar. You’ll find possible causes, simple checks you can make safely, and signs that your system needs professional attention.
AC Is Running, But Your Home Still Feels Warm
Common causes: Restricted airflow, a dirty condenser coil, thermostat problems, a frozen evaporator coil, electrical faults, or refrigerant-related issues can reduce cooling.
Safe to check first: Set the thermostat to Cool and Auto, check the filter, and make sure the outdoor unit has power.
Call a technician when: The air remains warm, the outdoor unit isn’t operating, or cooling repeatedly drops off.
Nothing Happens When You Start the AC
Common causes: A thermostat problem, tripped breaker, failed capacitor, contactor, control board, or wiring issue can keep the system from starting.
Safe to check first: Confirm the thermostat display is active and set to Cool. If the breaker has tripped, reset it once.
Call a technician when: The breaker trips again or the system remains inactive.
Water Is Appearing Around the Indoor Unit
Common causes: A clogged condensate drain, frozen coil, damaged drain pan, or drainage problem can cause condensation to escape from the normal path.
Safe to check first: Turn the AC off if water is collecting and check whether the filter is heavily dirty.
Call a technician when: Water continues to appear or reaches flooring, walls, ceilings, or electrical components.
Frost or Ice Is Building Up
Common causes: Insufficient airflow, blocked returns, a dirty filter, coil problems, or a refrigerant issue can cause the evaporator coil to freeze.
Safe to check first: Turn off cooling and let the ice melt naturally. Replace a dirty filter and keep vents clear.
Call a technician when: The ice returns or the system still struggles to cool after thawing.
Your AC Has Started Making a Different Sound
Common causes: Loose components, fan problems, worn motors, or electrical parts can produce rattling, buzzing, grinding, or squealing sounds.
Safe to check first: Turn the system off and note when the sound occurs. Don’t reach inside the equipment.
Call a technician when: The noise is persistent, worsening, or accompanied by vibration, poor cooling, or a burning smell.
The AC Keeps Starting and Stopping
Common causes: Airflow restrictions, thermostat issues, equipment faults, or improper system sizing can cause unusually short cycles.
Safe to check first: Look at the filter and make sure return grilles and supply vents are unobstructed.
Call a technician when: The system shuts down after only a few minutes or repeatedly fails to reach the thermostat setting.
The AC Cools, But the House Still Feels Damp
Common causes: Airflow problems, drainage issues, equipment condition, or a system that isn’t removing enough moisture can affect indoor comfort.
Safe to check first: Keep windows and exterior doors closed while cooling and check that the filter is clean.
Call a technician when: Humidity remains high, condensation appears, or musty odors develop.

Is Another AC Repair the Right Move?
A failed component doesn’t automatically mean you need a new system. The equipment’s condition, repair history, cooling performance, and cost of the proposed work all matter.
Repair May Be Practical When
- The system is in sound overall condition
- The problem involves one repairable component
- The AC has performed reliably until now
- The repair cost is reasonable for the equipment
- The repair can restore dependable cooling
Replacement May Deserve Consideration When
- Breakdowns are becoming more frequent
- A major component has failed
- Several expensive repairs are needed
- Cooling remains inconsistent after previous work
- The equipment is aging and repair costs keep adding up
What About the Refrigerant?
Older equipment can use refrigerants that affect the cost and availability of service. The refrigerant type is only one part of the decision, though. When a system has a refrigerant-related problem, we’ll consider the equipment’s age, condition, repair requirements, and replacement options rather than recommending a change based on refrigerant alone.
Why Boca Raton Can Be Tough on AC Systems
Boca Raton’s coastal location means air conditioners deal with heat, humidity, rain, and occasional severe weather. The conditions around a property can also affect outdoor equipment and drainage.
Humid Indoor Air
Your AC removes moisture as it cools your home. When airflow, drainage, or system operation is affected, the temperature may feel comfortable while indoor rooms still feel damp.
Heavy Rain and Storms
Heavy rain, strong winds, and storm conditions can affect AC equipment and drainage. Water, debris, power interruptions, and outdoor-unit issues may create cooling problems.
Condos, HOAs & Different Property Types
Boca Raton has homes, condos, commercial properties, and coastal communities with different AC setups. Equipment location, access, ductwork, and building requirements can vary.
Local Conditions Matter
Local weather is only one part of the diagnosis. We also consider equipment age, airflow, drainage, electrical components, refrigerant, and overall system condition.

We've been a customer of Prime Air Conditioner LLC since 2020. We're very pleased with their company including both installations and service. We have 2 commercial A/C units in our offices that they put in and maintained and we have 3 residential units in three separate condos that we own where they've installed and maintained the units and we're planning to have them replace the last one soon. We've recommended them to other people (including my next door neighbor who had 2 units installed). Gerald and his technicians including Wilson, George and most recently Kensley and Trent are all polite capable young men. When we need something and call, Day usually answers and coordinates the service in a super friendly way.Posted on Google![]()

Called at 5:30pm, fixed by 6:30pm. Honestly they impressed my husband more than me since he was urging me to make a review. That alone is enough for 5 stars lol. Husband is very suspicious about any contractor really, expecting to get scammed or over charged yada yada. The issue was a broken capacitor. Charged us $250 total (was going to be $85 to come out regardless). Husband thinks that's pretty reasonable... Personally most places were closing and this place had decent reviews and was active on Google which is a plus in my book. I just wanted to not be sweating in an extreme heat wave. We're also first time home owners so this is a first and we'll be using them again if any other issues arise.Posted on Google![]()

Why is my AC running but not cooling my Boca Raton home?
Several issues can produce this symptom, including restricted airflow, dirty coils, electrical faults, blower problems, thermostat issues, or refrigerant-related problems. The system needs to be tested to determine which one is affecting performance.
Why does my AC keep turning on and off?
Frequent cycling can result from restricted airflow, thermostat problems, equipment faults, or system sizing. A dirty filter is worth checking first, but repeated short cycles should be investigated.
Why is water leaking from my AC?
The condensate drain may be blocked, the evaporator coil may have frozen, or the drain pan or drainage system may have a problem. Turn the system off if water is accumulating heavily and arrange for the source to be checked.
Why is water leaking from my air conditioner?
Usually because the condensate drain line is clogged. In South Florida humidity, an AC pulls a lot of water out of the air, and algae and debris can block the drain. A cracked drain pan or a frozen coil can also cause leaks. Turn the system off to limit water damage and call for service, especially in a condo where water can reach the unit below.
Does living near the coast affect my AC?
Coastal air contains salt and moisture that can contribute to corrosion of exposed outdoor equipment over time. Properties closer to the ocean may therefore need closer attention to outdoor coils and electrical connections.
Should I repair or replace an older AC?
Not necessarily. The better choice depends on the equipment’s condition, repair history, cooling performance, remaining useful life, and cost of the proposed repair. An inspection can help you compare the two options.
How long does an AC repair usually take?
It depends on the problem. A straightforward component repair may be completed during one visit when the required part is available. More complicated failures or parts that need to be sourced can take longer.
