Common AC Problems We Help With
An air conditioner doesn’t always fail without warning. Changes in airflow, temperature, moisture, sounds, or cycling can tell you that something needs attention.
Cold Air Gone? AC Blowing Warm?
Common causes: Refrigerant loss, poor airflow, a dirty outdoor coil, thermostat trouble, or a condenser problem can leave the system running without providing enough cooling.
Safe to check first: Set the thermostat to Cool, check the filter, and confirm the HVAC breaker is on.
Call a technician when: Warm air continues after these checks or the outdoor unit isn’t operating properly.
AC Dead? It Won’t Turn On?
Common causes: A tripped breaker, thermostat failure, bad capacitor, wiring issue, or faulty control component can prevent the AC from starting.
Safe to check first: Make sure the thermostat display is working and check the HVAC breaker. Reset a tripped breaker once.
Call a technician when: The equipment stays off, the breaker trips again, or you notice an electrical smell.
Why Is Your AC Leaking Water?
Common causes: A blocked condensate drain, overflowing pan, frozen coil, or float switch problem can cause water to collect around the indoor equipment.
Safe to check first: Turn off the AC if water is pooling and check whether the filter is heavily restricted.
Call a technician when: Water keeps returning, the drain backs up, or the system shuts down unexpectedly.
Is Your AC Freezing Up?
Common causes: Restricted airflow, low refrigerant, a dirty evaporator coil, blower trouble, or another operating issue can make the coil freeze.
Safe to check first: Turn off cooling and allow the ice to melt. Replace a heavily blocked filter before restarting the system.
Call a technician when: Ice forms again or cooling and airflow remain below normal after the equipment thaws.
Hearing Strange Noises From Your AC?
Common causes: Buzzing can come from electrical parts, rattling from loose panels or debris, and grinding from worn motors or bearings.
Safe to check first: Pay attention to where the noise comes from and whether it starts during startup, operation, or shutdown.
Call a technician when: The sound doesn’t go away, becomes louder, or appears with vibration or reduced cooling.
AC turns on and off too often
Common causes: A restricted filter, airflow problem, thermostat fault, refrigerant issue, equipment sizing, or another system condition can cause repeated starts.
Safe to check first: Replace a dirty filter and make sure return and supply vents aren’t blocked.
Call a technician when: The AC continues switching on and off every few minutes despite basic airflow checks.
Why Does Your Home Still Feel Humid?
Common causes: An oversized system that cools too fast to remove moisture, the fan set to On instead of Auto, dirty coils, low refrigerant, or leaky ducts pulling in humid attic air.
Safe to check first: Set the fan to Auto and keep windows closed. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent to help prevent mold.
Call a technician when humidity stays high, you notice a musty smell, or mold appears around vents.

Repair or Replace Your AC?
A breakdown by itself doesn’t determine whether an air conditioner should be replaced. The equipment’s condition, repair history, cooling performance, and cost of the current repair all deserve consideration.
Repair May Make Sense When
- The equipment is otherwise in good condition
- The problem is limited to one component
- Cooling has been reliable
- The repair cost is reasonable for the equipment
- The system has a manageable repair history
Replacement May Be Worth Considering When
- Major components are failing
- Breakdowns are becoming more frequent
- Multiple repairs are adding up
- Cooling remains inconsistent
- Keeping the existing system running is becoming expensive
Refrigerant and Older AC Systems
Refrigerant type can affect the options available for older equipment. R-22 is no longer newly produced in the United States, although existing R-22 systems can still be serviced using available refrigerant.
Older R-410A systems can also be repaired and maintained. If refrigerant loss or another significant problem is found, we’ll explain what it means for the existing equipment and what choices are available.
Local Conditions That Can Affect AC Performance
West Palm Beach has a low-lying coastal setting and the city maintains dedicated flood and coastal-management resources. The city notes that flooding can occur in different parts of the community, while shoreline areas face risks from storm surge, sea-level rise, and high-tide flooding.
Coastal Air & Outdoor Equipment
Moisture and salt-containing air can affect exposed outdoor components over time. Condenser coils, electrical connections, and other exterior parts may show wear that matters when diagnosing cooling problems.
Humidity & Indoor Comfort
The AC has to lower temperature while pulling moisture from the indoor air. Poor airflow, short cycling, or drainage trouble can make a property feel damp even when the thermostat reaches its setting.
Heavy Rain & Flooding
Rainfall and coastal water can create drainage and flooding concerns. After severe weather, outdoor equipment, electrical components, and condensate drainage may need closer attention.
Different Property Types
Century Village East alone has more than 8,500 condo units, and many local homes have air handlers in tight closets. That's routine work for our team.

We've been a customer of Prime Air Conditioner LLC since 2020. We're very pleased with their company including both installations and service. We have 2 commercial A/C units in our offices that they put in and maintained and we have 3 residential units in three separate condos that we own where they've installed and maintained the units and we're planning to have them replace the last one soon. We've recommended them to other people (including my next door neighbor who had 2 units installed). Gerald and his technicians including Wilson, George and most recently Kensley and Trent are all polite capable young men. When we need something and call, Day usually answers and coordinates the service in a super friendly way.Posted on Google![]()

Called at 5:30pm, fixed by 6:30pm. Honestly they impressed my husband more than me since he was urging me to make a review. That alone is enough for 5 stars lol. Husband is very suspicious about any contractor really, expecting to get scammed or over charged yada yada. The issue was a broken capacitor. Charged us $250 total (was going to be $85 to come out regardless). Husband thinks that's pretty reasonable... Personally most places were closing and this place had decent reviews and was active on Google which is a plus in my book. I just wanted to not be sweating in an extreme heat wave. We're also first time home owners so this is a first and we'll be using them again if any other issues arise.Posted on Google![]()

AC repair questions from Deerfield Beach homeowners
Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Don’t see yours? Call or text our team.
- Emergency AC repair 24/7

Do you offer 24/7 emergency AC repair in Deerfield Beach?
Yes. Prime Air Conditioning provides emergency AC repair 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in Deerfield Beach and nearby cities. Call (954) 957-4286. Office hours for scheduled service are Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 5 PM.
How much does AC repair cost in Deerfield Beach?
It depends on what failed. Replacing a capacitor or clearing a clogged drain line costs far less than repairing a refrigerant leak or replacing a blower motor or compressor. A technician diagnoses the system first and explains the repair and its price before any work begins.
Why is my AC running but not cooling?
The most common causes are a dirty air filter, a failed capacitor or condenser fan motor, low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty condenser coil, or a thermostat that is set incorrectly. Check the thermostat and filter first. If the outdoor fan isn’t spinning or the air stays warm, turn the system off and call a technician to protect the compressor.
Why is water leaking from my air conditioner?
Usually because the condensate drain line is clogged. In South Florida humidity, an AC pulls a lot of water out of the air, and algae and debris can block the drain. A cracked drain pan or a frozen coil can also cause leaks. Turn the system off to limit water damage and call for service, especially in a condo where water can reach the unit below.
Should I repair or replace my air conditioner?
Repair usually makes sense for a system under about 10 years old with a single failed part. Consider replacement if the unit is 12 to 15 years old, needs a compressor or coil, still uses R-22 refrigerant, or keeps breaking down. We explain both options so you can decide.
Can an R-410A air conditioner still be repaired?
Yes. There is no federal end date for servicing existing R-410A systems, so they can still be repaired and recharged. R-410A is expected to become more expensive over time, and new systems use R-454B or R-32 refrigerant, which can’t be added to an R-410A system.
How long does an AC system last in South Florida?
Most central air conditioners here last roughly 10 to 15 years. Near-constant use, high humidity and salt air near the coast can shorten that, while regular maintenance helps a system reach the longer end of the range.
How often should an AC be serviced in Deerfield Beach?
Because air conditioners run most of the year here, twice-a-year maintenance is a good schedule, along with checking the air filter every month. See our home AC maintenance page for details.
Do you repair ductless mini-splits and commercial rooftop units?
Yes. We repair ductless mini-split systems from brands such as Mitsubishi Electric, MRCOOL and Pioneer, as well as rooftop package units and split systems for offices, retail spaces and property managers.
Is Prime Air Conditioning licensed in Florida?
Yes. Prime Air Conditioning LLC holds Florida state-certified air conditioning contractor license CAC1820210 and has been a BBB Accredited Business since 2020, with an A+ rating. You can verify any Florida contractor license with the Department of Business and Professional Regulation at MyFloridaLicense.com.
